ISBN Buying Guide (Australia)

Mindful Machines Press · ~3 min read · Published Sep 11, 2026

Where to buy ISBNs as an Australian independent publisher, how many to buy, and the one-time fee that trips up first-time buyers. This is step 1, before any KDP or IngramSpark title setup — both of those wizards ask for an ISBN you already own.

Who administers ISBNs in Australia

Unlike some countries, ISBNs are not free in Australia. The national ISBN agency is Thorpe-Bowker, operating as myidentifiers.com.au (part of the Bowker/Nielsen identifier-services group). Every Australian-registered publisher, including a sole-trader imprint, buys ISBNs directly from them.

What you’re actually buying: one ISBN per format

An ISBN identifies a specific format of a title, not the title itself. Ebook, paperback, hardback, and audiobook editions of the same book each need their own distinct ISBN — never reuse one across formats. A single title publishing in two formats (ebook + paperback, say) uses two ISBNs before a second book is even in the picture.

This is the reason to buy a block, not a single ISBN, the moment more than one format or more than one title is planned.

Pricing

QuantityPrice (AUD)Per-ISBN cost
1 (single)$44$44.00
10 (block)$88$8.80
100 and larger blocksNot published online — contact Thorpe-Bowker directlyLower again
  • A 10-block costs the same as 2 singles — the practical minimum purchase for almost any independent publisher.
  • A one-time New Publisher Fee of $55 (inc. GST) is added automatically on the first order only, for anyone who hasn’t bought from Thorpe-Bowker before. It does not recur on later top-up purchases.
  • Larger blocks (100, 1,000+) exist for higher-volume publishers; pricing for those tiers isn’t published and needs a direct call to Thorpe-Bowker.

A note on GST: the tax invoice itemizes every line excluding GST, with 10% GST added once as a single line at the bottom. The $44 / $88 figures above are the GST-inclusive prices shown when buying on the site — the same numbers, just presented the other way around on the receipt (e.g. the 10-block is $80 ex-GST on an invoice, $88 inc-GST at checkout).

Real example: a first order

Here’s an actual first-time order, dated 24 Aug 2026, bundling ISBNs with barcodes and QR codes:

ItemCost (ex. GST)
10 ISBNs$80.00
3 barcodes$122.73
2 × “1–5 QR Codes” pack$36.36
Package discount−$40.00
New Publisher Fee$50.00
Subtotal$249.09
GST (10%)$24.91
Total paid$274.00

What this reveals that isn’t obvious from the price list alone:

  • Barcodes and QR codes are separate purchasable products, not bundled with the ISBN itself. On this order they worked out to about $45 each (inc. GST) for a barcode and $20 each (inc. GST) for a “1–5 QR Codes” pack. Note that IngramSpark’s own Cover Template Generator can also produce a print barcode as part of the cover file (see Print File Specifications) — check whether a standalone Thorpe-Bowker barcode is actually needed before adding it to an order.
  • A package/bundle discount applies when ISBNs, barcodes, and QR codes are bought together in one order — about $44 (inc. GST) off here. Discount amounts aren’t guaranteed and may vary by promotion, so treat this as illustrative rather than fixed.
  • The New Publisher Fee landed at $50 ex-GST, i.e. $55 inc-GST — matching the figure quoted above.

How to buy

  1. Go to myidentifiers.com.au and register or sign in — this creates an ISBN Dashboard listing publisher of record for every ISBN and title on the account.
  2. Add the quantity wanted to the cart and pay by card.
  3. ISBNs are issued immediately by email on payment — no waiting period for the numbers themselves.

Practical sequencing for a new title or press

  1. Size the purchase before buying. Count formats per title (ebook, paperback, hardback) × planned titles, and buy at least that many. A 10-block covers most independent authors’ first one or two titles across ebook + paperback.
  2. Register the myidentifiers.com.au account (one-time, not per-title).
  3. Buy the block. Expect the one-time $55 new-publisher fee on this first order only.
  4. Assign one ISBN per format when setting up each title on KDP and IngramSpark — see the IngramSpark Title Setup guide for the exact field.
  5. Track which ISBNs in the block are used, to avoid assigning the same number to two different formats or titles.

The free-ISBN trap on KDP and IngramSpark

Both major platforms offer a “free” ISBN if you don’t supply your own:

  • KDP’s free ISBN lists Amazon’s own generic imprint (“Independently Published”) as publisher of record, not your own imprint name.
  • IngramSpark’s free ISBN similarly locks the imprint name to “Indy Pub” and ties that specific ISBN to IngramSpark exclusively.

Neither is appropriate if the imprint name matters to you — always enter an owned ISBN from the Thorpe-Bowker block instead.

Sources and recheck cadence

Pricing confirmed directly from myidentifiers.com.au listings and cross-checked against an independent third-party publishing guide (Books.by, 2026): $44 single / $88 for 10 / $55 one-time new-publisher fee. ISBN agency pricing can change without much notice — verify the current figures at myidentifiers.com.au immediately before a purchase rather than relying on the numbers here beyond a year or so out.
